Jesus didn’t feel welcomed by religious people either.

1 min. read

Jesus was a Jew. He attended the local synagogues. He frequented the temple in Jerusalem. But he was often not welcomed. Why? In Jesus’ case, he openly questioned the clergy and their religious practices. They bristled with anger when he challenged their doctrines, beliefs, and long-held traditions.

We may disagree with something being preached from the pulpit or question a religion’s moral stance on an issue. Even more alienating is when we ask sincere questions, and we’re met with derision or animosity by fellow church members.

He created division. Stirred up controversy. Many of his followers walked away because his teachings of unconditional love were as radical then as they are today. His denouncement of hate, bigotry, and pride didn’t sit well with the powerful, the elitists, or the sanctimonious. They did everything they could to make him uncomfortable in their religious services because he made them uncomfortable. But that didn’t stop Jesus from attending or questioning.
